“Oh my God, what just happened?” Vivian shrieked. “What did she do to Leo?”

The Range Rover hit a pothole. Vivian and the detective jostled as the chassis rocked, causing the laptop to slide off Francois’ lap to the foot well.

“Can you slow down, please?” The detective unbuckled his seatbelt and then reached down to retrieve his laptop.

“I’m not slowing down.” Vivian stomped her foot on the gas. “That crazy woman did something to Leo! What did she do to him?”

Closing the laptop, the detective struggled as he reached inside his sports jacket. “I’m not sure but—“

“How are you not sure?” Vivian demanded. The SUV swerved from left to right as she jerked the wheel, trying to avoid potholes, desperate to keep up with the limo whose taillights seemed so far away. Too far away. “You were watching the live feed! What did she do to him?”

“It was hard to tell, but I think she sprayed something in his face.”

“Sprayed something in his face?” Vivian asked, her heart slamming. The woman they’d found in Mick Walters’ bungalow had sprayed something at Leo. Whatever it was, it had only disoriented him. Had Constance sprayed the same substance? Or, something different? Something deadly?

“Please, God,” Vivian said. “Don’t let it be some kind of poison or a toxin.”

“I don’t think so,” said Baxter. “I think it was something to knock him out. Chloroform, probably.”

“Oh God no,” Vivian whispered, her heart racing, terror, and hysteria battling within her. She’d been chloroformed once before. A year ago. Vivian remembered the horrifying desperation she’d experienced as a black shroud enveloped her. The night she’d been drugged and kidnapped by a crazed psycho. The sick bastard had tried to kill Vivian, but Leo had saved her.

Tonight, if she had to, Vivian would save him.

The detective pulled out his cell phone. “I’m going to call for back-up.”

“How does Constance know who Leo really is?” Vivian asked, her pulse screaming through her veins. “Oh my God, she’s going to kill him! She probably thinks he’s trying to do an expose on the facility. How did she find out that it was a sting operation?”

“I don’t know, but I’m …” The detective turned to look behind him.

“What is it?” Vivian asked.

“Think we got company,” said Detective Francois.

Vivian’s pulse jumped. “Company?”

“Someone’s following us.”

Vivian glanced at the rearview mirror. Headlights, about three car lengths back. Speeding behind them, the car seemed to be closing the gap fast.

“Listen to me,” said the detective. “I want you to slow down.”

“We don’t need to slow down,” protested Vivian. “We need to speed up! We have to get to Leo! We have to—”

The rear windshield exploded, spraying glass.

Screaming, Vivian struggled to control the Range Rover as it swerved and headed left toward the guardrail …
